Life After Teeth Whitening Treatments

Teeth whitening treatments can have life-changing benefits that affect your personal and professional life. The condition of your teeth is one of the most noticeable things about your physical appearance, and having a smile you can be proud of gives you a confidence boost.

You will no longer find yourself smiling with your mouth closed or feeling self-conscious during interactions because you are afraid of what others might think about your stained and discolored teeth. A pearly white smile also gives you a more youthful appearance.

Also, teeth whitening tends to lead to improved oral hygiene as you try to maintain your teeth’s new color. Improved oral health leads to improved overall health.

Maintaining the results of teeth whitening treatments

Whitening treatments involve using hydrogen peroxide or hydrogen carbamide to remove stains from the outer and inner layers of teeth. The molecules of these chemicals react with stains on teeth, oxidizing them away. The results of teeth whitening treatments do not last forever, but that does not mean your teeth have to go back to the way they once were.

A person’s teeth will eventually pick up new stains and discoloration after getting whitening treatments due to being exposed to things that cause stains like dark-colored foods/beverages, smoking, and the aging process. Teeth can also pick up new stains due to issues like tooth decay or certain prescription drugs like tetracycline antibiotics.

Fortunately, there are a variety of things that can be done to help teeth to maintain their new color and to prevent them from going back to how they were before whitening treatments:

  • Good oral hygiene: Brushing and flossing get rid of plaque, coloring agents, and food particles left on teeth. It can also help to remove newly formed surface stains. Dentists recommend brushing twice daily and flossing once every day
  • Whitening toothpaste and mouthwash: OTC whitening toothpaste and mouthwash can help to get rid of stains and discoloration in their infancy. These products should not be overused though. Once a week is enough
  • Regular teeth cleanings: Teeth cleanings remove tartar – calcified plaque – from teeth surfaces. Tartar gives teeth a yellow tint and it is more prone to staining that teeth. Teeth cleanings also provide an opportunity for the dentist to evaluate the patient’s teeth so maintenance whitening treatments can be performed as needed
  • Maintenance treatments: Regardless of how well teeth are cared for after whitening treatments, noticeable stains and discoloration will eventually form on them. These stains can be removed with maintenance whitening sessions. At-home whitening kits provided by dentists work well for maintenance treatments. If significantly staining and discoloration has occurred, the dentist might recommend an in-office whitening session
